The best free teleprompter apps in 2026

Ten teleprompter apps and web tools, with what each one really gives you for free, what costs extra and who it suits. Including the places where our own app falls short.

By the EasyPrompter team at Dynamic DigitalUpdated 12 min read

Disclosure: we make EasyPrompter. It's listed first because it's our product, not because we ranked it above everything else. We've tried to be fair: every competitor fact below comes from that company's own website or app store listing, checked on 15 October 2026, and we say plainly where other apps do things EasyPrompter can't.

"Free teleprompter app" covers very different things. Some tools are genuinely free with no strings. Others are free plans of paid apps, with a watermark, a time cap or a limited number of voice-scrolling sessions. And some of the most-used teleprompters aren't standalone apps at all, but a feature inside a video editor. This roundup sorts them out so you can pick the right one for how you actually record.

How we chose

We started from the apps that come up again and again when people search for a free teleprompter, in roundups from creators, video tool makers and teleprompter companies, then checked each one against its own website or app store page. To make the list, an app had to offer a teleprompter you can actually use without paying, or be so widely recommended that leaving it out would be misleading (that's why PromptSmart is here, clearly marked as paid).

For each app we looked at five things:

  • The real free tier. Watermarks, time limits, character caps and whether you need an account.
  • Platforms. Browser, phone, tablet, desktop, and whether your scripts follow you.
  • Reading controls. Speed, text size, mirroring for beam-splitter glass and remote control.
  • Extras. Voice scrolling, recording, overlays and AI writing.
  • Price of the first paid step, as listed on the vendor's own site.

We didn't use affiliate links, and nobody paid to be included. Where a vendor's site didn't state something clearly, we say "not listed" rather than guess.

The best free teleprompter apps

1. EasyPrompter: a full prompter in the browser, no account

EasyPrompter is our free online teleprompter. Open studio.easyprompter.app on a phone, tablet or computer, paste a script and press Start. There's nothing to install and no sign-up. It's also a free native app for iPhone, iPad and Mac on the App Store, with the same account and scripts.

  • Free: the whole prompter. Speed from 40 to 320 words per minute, an amber reading line you can move, a 3-2-1 countdown, loop, mirror and flip for beam-splitter glass, six reading fonts, custom colors, control from a keyboard, Bluetooth remote or presentation clicker, and eye contact: the two lines you're reading in a narrow island right under the camera, with the camera picture behind the script if you like. It holds one script at a time and doesn't save it.
  • Paid: Pro costs €11.99/month or €69/year, VAT included. It adds saved scripts synced across devices, as many scripts as you like, remote control from another device (run the prompter on your phone from your computer), a formatting editor, an AI script writer in seven languages, recording yourself while you read (the video stays on your device), the installable app and priority support.
  • Where it falls short: no voice-activated scrolling, and recording isn't free. Only the Mac app has an island that floats above other apps; in a browser there's no overlay.
  • Best for: anyone who wants a capable prompter right now, especially with a clicker or a beam-splitter rig.

See every setting on the features page and the plans on the pricing page.

2. CuePrompter: the simplest free web prompter

CuePrompter has been around for years and does one thing: paste text and it scrolls. Its site says it's free for commercial and non-commercial use, with no sign-up and no downloads, and that it's made by Teleprompter.com.

  • Free: adjustable scroll speed, mirror mode for teleprompter glass, and a few text and color options, in any modern browser.
  • Paid: no paid plan for CuePrompter itself. The site points to Teleprompter.com's apps if you want more.
  • Limitations: script saving, keyboard or remote control and voice scrolling aren't listed.
  • Best for: a quick, no-frills read, or a spare screen in a hardware rig.

Our CuePrompter comparison goes into the differences with EasyPrompter.

3. Speakflow: browser prompter with voice scrolling

Speakflow runs in the browser and has apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad. Its standout is Flow, which scrolls the script as you speak.

  • Free: auto scrolling, a limited allowance of Flow voice scrolling, script creation and formatting, and a 7-day script history. No credit card needed.
  • Paid: Plus is $15/month billed yearly, with unlimited Flow, an overlay (a virtual teleprompter over other apps, such as Zoom or Teams), recording with an hour of video storage, voice commands, syncing and real-time collaboration. Plus Passes cover 7, 30 or 90 days.
  • Limitations: the voice scrolling, overlay and recording that make it stand out are mostly on Plus. Mirror mode isn't listed on its pricing page.
  • Best for: people who want hands-free scrolling and are likely to pay for it, and teams that write scripts together.

More detail in our Speakflow comparison.

4. Teleprompter.com: the most generous free plan for voice scrolling

Teleprompter.com has apps for iOS, Android and macOS plus a web version. Its free Starter plan is unusually full-featured, so it's a strong pick if voice scrolling matters to you.

  • Free (Starter): voice-activated scrolling, cloud script storage, custom fonts and colors, remote control and recording, exported at up to 1080p with a watermark. The AI script generator can be tried once.
  • Paid: Pro is $19.99/month per seat, or $7.50/month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial on yearly plans. It removes the watermark, adds 4K export and text mirroring.
  • Limitations: you sign up for an account, the watermark stays on free recordings, and mirroring for beam-splitter glass is a paid feature.
  • Best for: recording yourself on a phone with the script following your voice.

See our Teleprompter.com comparison.

5. Instagram Edits: free and built into the camera

Meta's Edits app added a teleprompter in 2025, and Instagram has since brought it into the main app's camera too. Tap record, pick the teleprompter, and type or paste your script.

  • Free: the teleprompter, with adjustable scroll speed and text size, shown near the front camera. You can drag it around the screen.
  • Paid: nothing for the teleprompter.
  • Limitations: it only works while recording inside the app, and it's built for vertical Reels. There's no mirroring for a rig, no remote control and you need an Instagram account.
  • Best for: short vertical videos you'll post to Instagram anyway.

6. CapCut: teleprompter plus AI script tools

CapCut's mobile app includes a teleprompter (All tools → Quick actions → Teleprompter, or straight from the recording screen), and CapCut's own site describes it as free.

  • Free: adjustable speed, font size and text color, a window you can move and resize, and AI buttons to improve, expand or shorten your text, all while recording.
  • Paid: CapCut sells a subscription for other features. Which features sit behind it changes between versions and regions, so check in your app.
  • Limitations: it lives in the mobile app and is tied to CapCut's camera. Not suited to beam-splitter rigs.
  • Best for: creators who already edit in CapCut.

7. BIGVU: teleprompter with a video studio attached

BIGVU combines a teleprompter with recording, captions and a set of AI video tools, on iOS, Android and the web.

  • Free: a forever-free plan for one person with the teleprompter, an AI script writer and 500 AI credits a month. Recordings are capped at 9 minutes, at 720p with a watermark.
  • Paid: Starter is $12/month or $149/year for 1080p without a watermark. Higher plans add 4K, longer recordings and AI eye-contact correction.
  • Limitations: the watermark and 720p cap make the free plan more of a trial for published videos.
  • Best for: people who want one app to script, record, caption and post.

8. Telepromptr: a long-running iPhone and iPad app

Telepromptr, from Teleprompter Apps Ltd, is a free download for iPhone and iPad with an optional Pro upgrade.

  • Free: the app store listing states that mirroring needs no upgrade.
  • Paid: Pro is an in-app purchase, offered as a one-time purchase or a subscription. The US App Store listed two Pro prices, $19.99 and $59.99.
  • Worth knowing: its site lists importing Word, PDF, text and Markdown files and clean HDMI output for an external screen. The last App Store update was version 4.4 in December 2024.
  • Best for: iPhone and iPad users who want a native app with mirroring for a rig.

9. Virtual Teleprompter Lite: a free overlay for Mac video calls

Virtual Teleprompter Lite on the Mac App Store puts a transparent script window over your meeting or streaming app, so you can read while looking near the webcam.

  • Free: the overlay with adjustable transparency, font size and color, arrow-key speed control, mirror mode, and offline use.
  • Paid: the Pro version removes the length cap and saves multiple speeches. A separate Windows version, Virtual Teleprompter PRO, is listed in the Microsoft Store.
  • Limitations: the free version is limited to 1,000 characters, which is roughly 150 to 200 words, or a little over a minute of speaking. Mac only, macOS 12 or later.
  • Best for: short talking points on Zoom, Meet or Teams.

10. PromptSmart: not free, but the voice-tracking pioneer

PromptSmart appears in nearly every teleprompter roundup because of VoiceTrack, its patented voice scrolling that pauses when you pause or ad-lib and picks up when you return to the script.

  • Free: a 7-day trial only.
  • Paid: Starter Pack is $9.99/month or $99.99/year, with iOS and Android apps, a desktop Studio Edition for Windows and macOS, web editing with sync and remote control.
  • Worth knowing: VoiceTrack supports English, Spanish, French, Russian and German, and its speech recognition runs on the device without internet.
  • Best for: presenters who want polished voice tracking and are happy to pay for it.

How to pick the right free teleprompter

Start with how you record, not with the feature list.

  • Selfie videos on your phone. The script needs to sit right by the front camera. Instagram Edits and CapCut do this inside their cameras. EasyPrompter's Start camera puts the lines you read right under the front camera too, free, and records the take with Pro. If you record with your phone's own camera app, run a browser prompter on a second device beside it. Our phone teleprompter guide covers both setups.
  • A camera with a beam-splitter rig. You need mirror mode. EasyPrompter and CuePrompter include it free; Telepromptr does too on iPhone and iPad. Teleprompter.com puts mirroring on its paid plans. See mirror mode and beam splitters.
  • Zoom, Meet and Teams. An overlay keeps the script over your call window: Virtual Teleprompter Lite (free, short scripts, Mac) or Speakflow Plus (paid). With a browser prompter, use a narrow window right under the webcam, or EasyPrompter's Eye contact. In EasyPrompter's Mac app, the eye contact island stays above every app, under the notch. More in teleprompter for Zoom.
  • Presentations and keynotes. A presentation clicker that also drives your script is the big win. EasyPrompter responds to standard clickers and keyboards for free. See teleprompter for presentations.
  • Hands-free reading. If you hate managing speed, voice scrolling is worth testing: Teleprompter.com's Starter plan first, then Speakflow, then PromptSmart's trial. Voice scrolling can stall on names, jargon or a noisy room, so try it with a real script.
  • Laptop or desktop. Browser tools work everywhere, while Speakflow, Teleprompter.com and PromptSmart also have desktop apps. Our teleprompter for PC and Mac guide compares setups.

Whichever you pick, set the speed from your real pace. Our reading speed guide explains how, and the speech time calculator tells you how long your script will run before you press Start.

Where EasyPrompter fits, honestly

EasyPrompter isn't the right tool for everyone. If you want the script to follow your voice, Teleprompter.com, Speakflow and PromptSmart all do that and we don't. If you want to record inside the teleprompter, Teleprompter.com, BIGVU, Instagram Edits and CapCut do that, and EasyPrompter now does too, with Pro. If you need a script floating over a video call, Speakflow Plus and Virtual Teleprompter have overlays; ours is the eye contact island in the Mac app, so in a browser or on Windows we don't.

Where we think EasyPrompter is strong: the free version is the whole prompter, with no account, no watermark, no time limit, mirroring and eye contact included and control from any keyboard or clicker. And if you later want saved scripts on every device, running your phone prompter from your laptop, recording yourself while you read, or an AI writer that sizes scripts to your reading speed, Pro adds those for €69 a year. Try it with a real script and judge for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free teleprompter app?

It depends on how you record. For a free prompter in any browser with no sign-up, EasyPrompter and CuePrompter are the simplest. If you want the script to follow your voice for free, Teleprompter.com's Starter plan and Speakflow's free plan include voice scrolling, with limits. For quick vertical videos on a phone, the teleprompters built into Instagram Edits and CapCut are free.

Is there a completely free teleprompter app?

Yes. CuePrompter describes itself as free for commercial and non-commercial use with no paid plan of its own, and EasyPrompter's full teleprompter is free with no account, holding one unsaved script at a time. The teleprompters inside Instagram Edits and CapCut are also free. Most other apps are freemium: the free plan works but adds limits such as a watermark, a script length cap or limited voice scrolling.

Which free teleprompter app works on both iPhone and Android?

Browser teleprompters such as EasyPrompter, CuePrompter and Speakflow work on both, because they run in the phone's web browser. Teleprompter.com, BIGVU, Instagram Edits and CapCut have apps for both iPhone and Android. Telepromptr is iPhone and iPad only.

Do free teleprompter apps have voice-activated scrolling?

A few do. Teleprompter.com lists voice-activated scrolling on its free Starter plan, and Speakflow's free plan includes a limited amount of its Flow voice scrolling. PromptSmart's VoiceTrack is a well-known voice scroller but needs a paid plan after a 7-day trial. EasyPrompter and CuePrompter scroll at a speed you set.

Can I use my phone as a teleprompter for free?

Yes. Open a browser teleprompter such as EasyPrompter on the phone, paste your script and place the phone right next to the camera lens, or under beam-splitter glass with mirror mode on. If you are recording with the phone itself, the free teleprompters in Instagram Edits and CapCut show the script over the camera view. So does EasyPrompter's Start camera, which puts the lines you read right under the front camera; recording the take needs Pro.

Which free teleprompter works best on Zoom calls?

For a script that floats over your call window, you need an overlay: Speakflow includes one on its paid Plus plan, and Virtual Teleprompter Lite for Mac has a free transparent overlay limited to 1,000 characters. With a plain browser teleprompter such as EasyPrompter, put a narrow window just under your webcam, or run it on a second device beside the camera. EasyPrompter's free Mac app also has an eye contact island under the notch that stays above every app; the app asks macOS to keep it out of screen sharing, which works where macOS allows it, so test once with a share.
