The verdict
The NEEWER Basics X12B is the best-value way to put a tablet in front of a camera. It arrives assembled, unfolds onto a tripod in a few minutes, and its 12-inch glass gives you text you can read from 3 metres. The camera sits on its own aluminium bracket, not on the lens. It's heavier than a phone teleprompter, it isn't made for wide-angle lenses or for filming with a phone, and some owners find the tablet holder could grip better.

What's good, what's not
Good
- No assembly: out of the case, onto the tripod, unfold.
- Solid aluminium; the camera rests on a bracket, not on the lens.
- 12-inch glass: large, clear text from a distance.
- Remote and carry case included.
Not so good
- 1.7 kg: it needs a sturdy tripod.
- Lenses from 28 mm only.
- Not made for filming with a phone.
- Some owners say the tablet holder can shift after tightening.
- Some owners struggle to pair the remote with NEEWER's app.
Setting it up with EasyPrompter
- Screw the X12B onto a sturdy tripod and unfold the hood.
- Put your camera on the bracket and slide it until the lens sits in the middle of the glass. If the glass sits too high for a small camera, raise the camera plate.
- Open EasyPrompter on the tablet, paste your script, turn on Mirror and lay the tablet on the tray. A phone works too: upright, the text is centred on the lens.
- Choose a text size you can read from where you stand, and set your reading speed.
The included remote is made for NEEWER's own app. To control EasyPrompter, use any Bluetooth remote or clicker your tablet sees as a keyboard, or EasyPrompter's remote control from a second phone.
What reviewers and owners say
There's no in-depth review of the X12B from a major publication yet. Digital Camera World's review of the bigger NEEWER X14 III names the X12B as its smaller, lighter and cheaper sibling, with a narrower angle of view, so the X14 III suits wide lenses better. On YouTube:

Owners mostly praise value, ease of use and a five-minute setup; the complaints are about the tablet holder's grip and pairing the remote.

Frequently asked questions
Does the NEEWER X12B fit a 12.9-inch iPad Pro?
No. It takes tablets up to 25 × 22 cm, such as an iPad Air or an 11-inch iPad Pro.
Can I film with my phone through the X12B?
No. A phone can show the script on the tray, but the X12B is made to film with a mirrorless camera or a DSLR, with lenses from 28 mm.
Do I need NEEWER's app?
No. Any teleprompter app that mirrors the text works. EasyPrompter does it for free; use a Bluetooth remote that acts as a keyboard, or EasyPrompter's remote control from a second phone.
Is it heavy?
It weighs about 1.7 kg, so use a sturdy tripod with a fluid head or a solid ball head.
