Ulanzi RT02 vs NEEWER X12B: which teleprompter should you buy?

The Ulanzi RT02 on a camera, with a script on the glass

The short answer

Buy the Ulanzi RT02 if your phone is your prompter, you travel, or you want to spend about $50. Buy the NEEWER X12B if you film with a camera and want big text from a tablet. They are not really rivals: one is a pocket-sized phone teleprompter, the other a 12-inch camera teleprompter that weighs more than three times as much. The right one depends on what you film with and what you read from.

Who should buy the Ulanzi RT02

  • Phone filmers. It is the only one of the two that can film with a phone: the quick-release holder takes phones 55 to 80 mm wide behind the glass.
  • Anyone travelling light. It folds flat, weighs 465 g, and still fits a camera lens with one of five rings.
  • Anyone on a budget. At about $50 it costs less than half the X12B.

Keep in mind what reviewers found: with a phone it weighs about 700 g, so give it its own tripod or stand rather than hanging it off the lens; the widest lens that keeps the hood out of the frame is around 22 to 25 mm; and there is no ring for 46, 49, 52 or 55 mm lenses, so you may need a step-up ring. Who should buy the NEEWER X12B

  • Camera shooters who want big text. The 12-inch glass shows a whole iPad Air or 11-inch iPad Pro, readable from 3 metres.
  • Interviews and presenters standing back. A larger reflection lets the speaker stand further from the camera.
  • Anyone who wants it to just work. It arrives assembled, the camera rests on an aluminium bracket instead of the lens, and a carry case is included.

The trade-offs: at 1.7 kg it needs a sturdy tripod; it is made for lenses from 28 mm; it is not made for filming with a phone; and some owners find the tablet holder could grip better. Read the full X12B review.

Using either one with EasyPrompter

Both are beam-splitter teleprompters, so the setup in EasyPrompter is the same: open it on the phone or tablet under the glass, paste your script, turn on Mirror and choose a text size you can read from where you stand. How mirror mode works.

Both come with a Bluetooth remote made for their own apps. We haven't tested those remotes with EasyPrompter, but any Bluetooth remote or clicker that your device sees as a keyboard works, and with Pro you can drive the prompter from a second phone.
